As part of a board, you have an important role to play in your community. If everyone on the board does their role well, their community as a whole will be better for it. But, if board members don’t take their roles seriously or don’t operate with integrity, it can harm the community.
There are several attributes that make for a great board member. A board member who really has a vested interest in their community will think beyond themselves. That means looking at what will benefit the community, instead of what will benefit them personally. These two things may not always align, but a good board member won’t let that stop them from making the right decision for the community. They will put the community first when it comes to making decisions.
Another attribute that makes for a good board member is being a good listener. You’ll hear a lot of differing opinions as a board member. It’s important you are willing to hear others out, even if the opinion doesn’t align with yours. Allow the person to say their piece and be respectful about their rights to their opinion. Don’t be quick to be defensive or shut down others, instead invite these conversations with a sense of openness. Sometimes a negotiation or compromise is needed in order to find the best resolve.
You also need to be accountable and responsible as a board member. You need to read the CC&R’s, bylaws and other important documents. You should know the ins and outs of your association. And, don’t be lax when it comes to your particular role on the board. You should know exactly what your job involves and make sure that you follow through on it.
It’s also important to have a sense of preparation. Prior to attending meetings, make sure you know what’s on the agenda. Read through and consider any questions you may have prior to the meeting.
As an HOA member, you should also be respectful of others in meetings. Try not to hog the floor. Voice what needs to be voiced and allow others to get a few words in.
There are many attributes that make for a good board member. When all is said and done, it’s important to do what’s in the best interest of the community. That’s what every board member’s ultimate goal should be.
